13 months!

Life has certainly gotten the best of me; it’s been so long since I posted anything and despite being so celebratory for her first birthday I got nothing jotted down for Hanna Lu’s 52nd week or her 12th month…oh well! Here goes 13 months as well as a slightly different format; this kid will have on whatever she has on on the 18th of the month and will hopefully pose nicely enough for us in the “Hanna” chair. I hope I’ve talked about how much we adore this seat and it’s so funny because Hanna seemed to fall in love with it just tonight – she reluctantly ate dinner and then wanted nothing but to get down and get back into her chair. Anyway:
How old: 13 months.

Weight: between 20 and 30 pounds.

Likes:
  • Getting on the ground.
  • Playing with a scooter that is at daycare; the toughie is she needs someone to hold her on it.
  • Calling Guinness the dog up to our bed when she’s getting her bedtime routine.
  • Holding my keys and Guinness’ leash {not together}; I have to come up with a diversionary tactic each time I need to take away the keys from her. I think she likes feeling useful and doing what the grown-ups do because if I let her have the keys after I get her out of the car, she’s very eager to swipe them in front of the key pad that lets us into our building.
  • Playing with other kids and being around other people; she says “hi” to everyone unless you ask her to in which case it’s a blank stare.
  • As of last weekend, strawberries and blackberries; yum!
  • Trying to feed herself with a spoon. Or maybe it’s just playing with the spoon she loves.
  • Having her teeth brushed, though it might be just the itty bit of toothpaste. We have a little thing I put on my finger with soft bristles on it but I think we’ll get her an actual little toothbrush soon.
  • “Curious George” on the TV, though this doesn’t happen very often.
  • All sorts of new things…it truly is amazing the new changes we see each week; saying new words, obviously noticing when I changed up the decorations on a wall, asking for “up” when she wants it, and liking our “green” smoothies, to name a few.

Dislikes:
  • Transitions; poor thing seems to have a tough time with changing from one activity to the next when we need to, especially if it’s going inside after being outside {we’ve been hanging out in front of our building with a group of other kiddos/moms/dogs after school on nice days and HL digs playing on the ground and watching the big kids run around}. I honestly think it’s just her personality coming out/frustration because she can’t do everything she wants {because she’s one year old}/not being able to communicate well paired with being tired – when are kids not tired?
  • Food/eating. I had high hopes for Hanna’s life-long weird eating habits that her pediatrician has always said are just Hanna-being-Hanna to go away and maybe they still will but I’ve battle a baseline of frustration each day regarding our child’s disinterest in eating/drinking. There are some things she likes {see “berries” above} and she loved baby food/baby cereal for a while {but one cannot live forever on purees} but there’s rarely gusto and it’s a constant concern of mine to ensure she’s hydrated and not cranky because she’s hungry. I’ve taken to giving her a pouch of applesauce or something else to eat on the way home because it’s a nice way to get things into her but it also helps with the transition {also, see above} of leaving daycare which was never really something that bothers her up until a week or so ago.
  • Green grass! We first noticed this last week when we thought it would be nice to sit on the grass at a park because it was really nice out and little girl clung on tight to either me or Michael, whoever was holding her. She was seemingly really nervous about the grass below our blanket. She also kept motioning to a large bronze tiger nearby and making a kind of upset sound. We tried taking her near it and baby was UNINTERESTED in that bronze lion. I’d like to let her know how great it is she is letting her feelings be known!

Communication:
Hanna seems to be coming up with new words each week. We haven’t been very good about pushing the Spanish or sign language but we try here and there. No matter what, though, our child certainly is communicative. She has a very specific set of noises she makes for things she doesn’t have words for yet; one for telling us to look at something {it includes a pointing motion}, one for wanting to nurse {along with pulling down my shirt which is unfortunate if we’re in mixed company}, and a delightful one for things she doesn’t like {a screech that definitely isn’t crying and is a sound she’ll repeat until we make things right again – see “grass” above}. Here are her current words, though obviously her iterations don’t always sound that clear:

  • Ma
  • Daaa
  • Up
  • Bye
  • Hai
  • Non-verbal head shaking
  • Guinness {our dog} {she usually pats the bed or couch or whatever we’re sitting on when she says his name because she’s trying to call him over…when he comes, then she says “haiiiii”}
  • Train
  • Zee Zee {my grandmother’s dog}
  • Kai {a friend at daycare}
  • Teeth
  • Hush {from “…an old lady who was whispering ‘hush’…” from “Goodnight Moon; she accompanies this with one finger to her mouth}
  • Non-verbal “more” {fingers from both hands together} and “bath” {rubbing fists on chest as if scrubbing}
  • Uh-oh
  • She responds to: Where's Hanna?  Where's your: belly button/nose/mouth/eyes? What does the old lady say? {"Hush" with a finger to the mouth}.

Milestones:
So many!
  • First ice cream and a taste of an ice just today; both were a hit.
  • First cow’s milk and strawberries and honey and all three were also a hit, though the berries the most.
  • Walking more and more though she’s still quite shakey; I remember she crawled early on but it took her a long time to get really fast at crawling so I’m wondering if it will be the same for walking.
  • Her first birthday and party; both went quite well and baby girl certainly likes her frosting.
  • Hanna got her first Easter basket on her second Easter and enjoyed some new shoes as well as her first set of crayons; she needs to be closely supervised with them because she likes to pop them into her mouth still but other than that the drawing portion of her childhood has commenced!
  • I’ve started to attempt getting back into running in a more serious manner than my prior dabbling and this means that HL has been logging some good jogging stroller time. She manages pretty well though I sometimes feel bad for the bumps in the road. It’s awesome because we have several local playgrounds on decent running routes and it breaks up these runs but she gets so upset when we leave and needs so much supervision still since she can’t really walk all too well I don’t do the playground routes but hopefully in a few months we can reincorporate them when I’m not working and have more time and HL can move better on her own.
Sleep and eat:
Things got a bit off due to moving/a welcomed slurry of visitors/being sick/a lax spring-break schedule so HL’s sleep hasn’t been as fabulous as it could be – she’s been waking once a night between 2 AM and 4 AM and we’re so pooped we just bring her back to bed with us for a bit. We’re currently on day/night three of trying to break this habit and hopefully things will get better.

Eating wise, please see above. I’d really like to get our daughter on mostly if not all “human” food and no more baby food or cereal but that’s still the quickest way to get food into her so it’s been challenging.

Miscellaneous:
Hanna wears 12 to 18 month sized clothing and could be a size 3 or 4 in diapers though she is wearing her cloth diapers all the time; they are open to the middle button length-wise and around her waist there are either three to five columns of buttons visible.

Hanna Lu has tiny feet and is just fitting into a size 2.

She has two teeth on the bottom and four up top with one more up there maybe trying to poke through.

We are loving on this girl so much and have the best times with her. Watching her grow up is a true privilege and we look forward to each day with her!

Two months.

We are barreling straight into summer as if there weren't a gorgeous baby doing new things every day! Let's see what exactly...
How old: two months old

Weight: 12 pounds, approximately.

Likes:
  • The ceiling fan! She gives the biggest smile she's capable of for the good 'ol fan. Mommy's a bit jealous.
  • Trees; she loves looking at them through the window and when we go outside.
  • Her baby pillow {just a pillow meant for babies to lounge on; not a purchase I would condone but it was a gift and she loves it...so does our dog when there's not a baby on it} and her playmat; she can sit and make very cute happy squawky sounds for a while in/on these two things.
  • Being bounced in our arms on our yoga ball; our cores are getting a good workout these days.
  • Sucking on her fist...it seems as though the thumb might find it's way in there but for now, with her coordination, it's almost the whole fist.
Dislikes:
  • Being left alone for too long; she's good on the mat/pillow for a while but she lets you know when she's done
  • Being encouraged to finish eating when she's done
  • Falling asleep on her own...this will change, we really hope

Milestones:
  • Two month shots...what a sad baby!
  • Hanna Lu has rolled over several times from her tummy to her back
  • She "talks" to us!
  • Lots of smiling...we love each one
  • She has met all of her grandparents and many of our DC friends

Sleep and eat:
  • Hanna will nap during the day really well when being held or worn and for between one and 20 minutes if we lay her down...hopefully this improves
  • We can usually get a three to five hour stretch of sleep, while she's down, at the beginning of the night {which can be between 9:30 and midnight for her} and then she'll sleep on and off until between eight and ten AM as long as she's on me...another thing we'd like to see change
  • Hanna Lu's eating is sporadic; she takes a bottle now {yippee!} but from me or a bottle she might only want an ounce or maybe more...she eats best when drowsy

Miscellaneous: There's so much going on in Hanna's next month! Her dad's graduation {YEA!}, trips to Shenandoah with family, California, and Arizona, as well as meeting lots of new and wonderful people; what a lucky girl! And so are we to have our beautiful little girl.

One month old.

We got these fun stickers and headbands from a friend...what a generous and cute gift for a new mom!
Someone wouldn't stretch out her legs.
Happy one month Hanna Lu! What a month it’s been with my health adventures…baby girl has adjusted really well and done beautifully.

She’s a very alert baby, holding eye contact for a long time and she’ll even follow something as it goes past her eyes.

She’s not the longest eater…I might have some issues with my milk supply {too much too fast} that make it tough for her and possibly give her a bit of reflux so hopefully she can adjust/grow out of this.

Hanna had a good week of morning/afternoon naps and then the past few days has been on strike. She’ll also have a fussy period from about 7 PM to midnight. This is tough and HL’s daddy really takes over at this time, which is awesome. She’ll have a good stretch of sleep at the beginning of her night, whenever it begins, and then maybe another good stretch of sleep, and then the last sleep before “getting up” for the morning isn’t that great. I’m wondering if her fidgety sleep is reflux/digestion related?

Hanna Lu is creeping up on a pound heavier than when she was born and definitely is too big for her newborn clothes. She’s a wee small for some 0 to 3 month clothes but not for all so that’s what she’s mostly in these days.

It seems like she can almost roll over but it could be her arching her back from tummy troubles…

We love this little girl oh so very much and can’t wait to see what she’s up to in the next month.
xoxo, natty ♥

Blossoms.

We ventured down to the cherry blossoms last week.
Pretty, but where's the pink?
The trees were pretty but the blossoms seemed way less pink than they were last year; it could've just been me.
"Yawn".
It was a short {& muggy, yuck} visit but we got a few pictures for posterity's sake...we were actually there!
Next year we should be able to stay down there a bit longer, hopefully!

Four weeks.

I’ll do an official “One Month” post on the 18th but today marks four weeks of Hanna Lu in our lives and that’s four weeks of our lives being infinitely better than they were. Unfortunately last week I fell ill again, but it was determined, finally {we sincerely hope}, that it’s a blood clot that I’ve been battling {they can cause fevers}…I’m currently on two types of antibiotics and blood thinners and a whole lotta desire for this ordeal to be over so that we can fully enjoy the sleeplessness and our beautiful baby. Thankfully, my step-mom was here helping us out/helping us to live {the woman knows how to feed people and watch a baby} and for that we are eternally grateful.

Anyway, on to happier things! I’ll be doing just once monthly updates after this so this is Hanna Lucy’s last weekly update, though I’ll stick with a picture a week for sure {I just love to see those thighs!}.
Not the clearest of today's bunch but at least her brow isn't furrowed the way it likes to be. And do I notice new thigh rolls on the left?!?!
How old: 4 weeks old

Weight: She clocked in at ten pounds and ten ounces this morning. Little bit is still a weird eater. It could be that “forceful letdown” thing but for the past few days she’ll have a feeding or two a day where she angrily cries and pulls off, then gets on again. She’ll repeat the process until she falls asleep if I let her but it’s so pitiful to see/hear her cry and I worry that it’ll cause her to dislike nursing. I ran it past the pediatrician briefly today and she said it won’t turn her off of it and to just keep an eye on the behavior. I’ll keep trying to pump for a minute or two before baby eats.

Likes:
·      Eating…sometimes.
·      Staring at people.
·      Staring at lights/windows.
·      Staring at a purple ribbon that’s part of a card that hangs on the wall above her changing pad.
·      Baths.
·      Being “worn”…but for a not-long time.
·      Driving…for a time and as long as the car is moving.
·      Making the cutest little face where she rounds her lips and seems to arch her brows; at least I like it.

Dislikes:
·      Eating…sometimes.
·      Those few cold moments after getting out of her bath.
·      When she’s settling in for a good sleep, she makes a very sweet little “ah” sound.

Milestones:
·      Baby girl saw her first cherry blossoms last week. We weren’t down there long and she was ready to go home and eat the moment we arrived but she saw them!
·      She has been doing some “tummy time” on her playmat for the first time. She can almost scoot forward, which seems odd. She lifts up her head and also turns it from side to side, though she rests it right after. There is a bout a two-minute appreciation of this exercise and then HL is ready for something else. She also enjoys the same playmat on her back, but I want her to get the time flipped over for her muscle development and head shape.
·      Someone got her very first bathrobe!
The face belies her true feelings towards he duckie robe. I think I'll be forcing her to wear it until it fits as a shirt, I think she's that stinkin' cute in it. Says an overly biased mother.
     Thank you Lola!!!
·      We think we might be seeing some actual smiles…they come when she’s in a staring contest with me and they’re not complete smiles but I love them. They'll never be camera catch-able, I'm sure.
·      Hanna Lu will also make an almost laughing sound in her sleep and maybe half smile at the same time…SO CUTE.

Sleep and eat:
·      Hanna Lu is eating every one and a half to three hours.
·      Some feedings are way shorter than others; she’s efficient and other times she’s either not ready to eat or peeved that it’s coming out too fast…same issues as earlier.
·      She has been sleeping in one of those Velcro-baby-straight-jackets instead of being swaddled in a blanket…she seems to fight this a bit less? Maybe because it’s not as stretchy as a blanket can be.
·      She is still a loud sleeper. My step-mom, Hanna Lu’s Lola, is SO gracious and will let us have the baby sleep out with her, and I’ll get up and go out and feed her…this has been tremendous because sometimes it’s hard to sleep with those crazy sounds she makes and with another ER visit in our recent history, this extra quiet sleep is amazing.
·      When she’s fixing to wake up, HL will often get really loud/fussy for about an hour while remaining asleep…should I let her sleep through this? She doesn’t come out of it really upset or that fussy, so I figure that even if it’s a light sleep it’s a sleep and I should let her be.
·      I’ve done the white noise machine during her naps a few days now and it seems to go well…but we haven’t given it a try at night yet. I also don’t know if we could handle the “heartbeat in the womb” sound {or any of the others, for that matter} that the baby seems to favor. What we can abide by, though, is the fan and I think it might be time to start having the fan on at night anyway {despite the next two days’ predicted cool weather} so maybe that can help drown out the baby sounds.
·      HL falls asleep best while eating, though she can be lulled to sleep while being held; neither of which are truly sustainable but I don’t believe we’re anywhere near getting to the point where we try to full-on teach her how to do it alone. Though I’ve read/heard that quickly waking baby as she’s put down to sleep and allowing her to re-fall asleep there in her crib is a good technique. I’m just way too scarred to give that one a try.

Miscellaneous:
·      Hanna Lu definitely has her witching hour towards the end of the afternoon/early evening/through to midnight sometimes. We work through it together and having the extra set of hands has been a true Godsend. I do think she’s just overtired/processing the day’s events {though she still sleeps for a lot of the day [on a good one], what gives?} and I’ve read to preempt the signs of tiredness but sometimes she’s just not ready to eat and that’s truly the best way for her to go to get there so we’ll have to just try different things and be glad that she’s adorable.
·      Someone has an Easter dress to wear and if she’s good then the Easter bunny may just deliver her some goodies {goodies that a one month old might enjoy}!

Cocoon baby.

Here are some outtakes from the other day's photo shoot.
She was feeling pensive?
Yes, that's the yoga mat but we haven't started baby yoga yet.
Hanna Lu is kind of ambivalent about her swaddling...but I think she's darn hilarious looking when all wrapped up.
Blue eyed for now.
We're hopefully starting some at-home baby yoga this week and we're also enjoying our time with Lola Ling Ling, on-loan from California for some very grateful new parents.
The baby whisperer.
And we're trying to get down to check out the cherry blossoms too...what a busy week for us!

Friday, April 4, 2014

Just a regular Friday.

Today we went to the breastfeeding clinic at the birth center...it's so good to have this twice-weekly outing. Hanna Lu needs to keep gaining weight but she does eat well; she's apparently pretty efficient at it which is why she doesn't spend too much time doing it!

Then she took a nap at home and smiled in her sleep.
She needs a bow to cover up those patchy hairs!
We went for a walk. HL cries when she's in her carseat and it's not in motion but I got this shot of her just sitting there before we clicked her into the stroller base.
I love her in that bomber hat.
And she got to be worn for the first time - I'm not sure if I got her in the wrap correctly but she was pretty happy and ended up falling asleep...a success I think!
It's so neat that everything is new for her and for us too!

Wardrobe changes.

Someone had just gotten dressed and we were all three {Grandma Melamed} enjoying some time together when there was some intense root-toot-tooting.
So Hanny Lucy gets two pretty outfits today, lucky girl. Meanwhile mama's just lazing around in whatever fits her now and I have a feeling that's something I should get used to {for now at least, right?!?!?!?}.
I suppose this multiple get ups a day thing is also something we should get used to.

In other news, Guinness got to get up close to the baby.
He's been sniffing and seems very alert when she cries sometimes. The biggest reaction out of Guinness, though, is when the babe cries at night - he is such a creature of habit and to have his nightly sleep disturbed vexes him.

Oh well, we'll all adjust!

One week {& a wee little day}.

Pardon the second post in one day but I'm trying to catch up a bit.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So we’re technically at a week and one little day old. Thanks to all the health setbacks {a really bad infection [including an104 degrees fever] that landed me back in the hospital two days after we got home; I just got home for good [hopefully]} I’ve been experiencing I haven’t been able to document things when/the way I’d like to but for now I have a few minutes; yippee!!

Anyway, I’d like to do these little statistics weekly for Hanna Lucy’s first month of life and then once a month or so afterwards, though I’m aiming to have a weekly picture in the same outfit to check out her growth visually. It’s so good to be home and we’re all hoping and praying to everything/one out there that I continue to get better and can be home with our little one. And what a stinker, she wouldn’t even look at the camera! So I’ll include a face shot and next week we’ll see if we can get her to look at the lens.
Let's see her face!
Ignore the odd lighting...we were in the hospital still and it was just a bit yellowy.
How old: 1 week old

Weight: it was 9 pounds 5 ounces last Friday and if I get my druthers later I’ll do an un-scientific weighing of me then me holding her. But let’s say/hope more than 9.5 ounces and less than her birth weight of 9 pounds 13 ounces.

Likes:
·      Nursing/eating.
·      Sucking; this reflex came out strong in our little one. A finger will do the job for a few minutes but then she soon realizes she’s not getting what she really wants. Since I was in the hospital and we were trying to stretch the milk I was pumping we gave her a pacifier a bit and apparently that went over quite well.
·      Her daddy.
·      Being held – this is a hard one because we can’t possible hold her all the time, can we?
·      Being warm.
·      Driving.

Dislikes:
·      Being hungry.
·      Being cold.
·      Not being held.
·      Sleeping between midnight and six AM.

Milestones:
·      Though it wasn’t for her, Hanna Lucy had her first ER visit…yuck.
·      She met two sets of grandparents and one of her uncles…such love!
·      She was born!
·      She met Guinness…he’s a bit more interested than she for now.

Sleep and eat:
·      Every three hours or so…I have to wake her. Me feeding her helps to keep fevers at bay so this is especially important.
·      She started sleeping better after my milk came in on Friday.
·      She sleeps best when held, though she has had some good stretches on her own.
·      We try to swaddle her for sleeping which seems to be better than not…too many of those infant arm spasms.
·      We’ve also tried a little sound machine {thanks to “The Happiest Baby on the Block”} but it doesn’t seem to help too much; perhaps when we’re a bit more stable we can start experimenting.

Miscellaneous:
·      This has been such a horrible past few days and I’m really looking forward to feeling better; Michael has been such an amazing husband and our parents have supported us in ways that aren’t surprising at all but it just fills my heart so much to know how loved we all are.

42 weeks and a setback.

So we had our baby! But then I got really sick and had to spend some more time in the hospital; I had meant to post this last Friday when I would've been 42 weeks pregnant so please forgive the tardiness. I'm probably not going to be posting as often as before but who knows?! Having been sick and also being a newborn's mother, it might be kind of nice to feel even somewhat connected to the world, even if it's just me plastering something on the internet.

Anyway, let's update!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And now there’s a baby! It was a reeeaaallly long week between the last update and this one and the last post but the happiest byproduct of is our beautiful daughter, Hanna Lucille. We’re recovering at home and looking forward to feeling more and more human as the days progress, though sleeplessness does not a thing to help with that. Let’s look at some stats.
How far along: today I would be 42 weeks – I had Hanna Lucy at 41 weeks and 4 days pregnant.

Symptoms:

·      We have a daughter, a real live baby that we’ve been entrusted {by whom?!} to care for.
·      It was a long and hard labor that ended up taking place in the hospital. Though not a C-section and I’m not recovering from surgery, it was actually a really difficult labor and I’m going to be recovering pretty gingerly these first few days.
·      Baby is very healthy {& large…see below} and has a wonderful clean bill of health; we are so grateful.

Wait gain: I actually haven’t looked at mine yet but she clocked in at 9 pounds 13 ounces on her birthday. And 22 inches long, just for the record.

Size of baby: see above.

Exercise: we are sequestered at home, besides appointments, for the next few weeks.

Milestones: Hanna Lou is nursing every several hours.

She hasn’t been sleeping for long stretches of time but hopefully now that there’s milk coming in that will change, though she sleeps best in our arms and it would be ever-so-nice for her to sleep somewhere else for more than 20 to 30 minutes.

Despite her size she still fits well enough in the newborn clothes we’ve tried on and is also filling out those newborn diapers.

What I miss
: well, I loved being pregnant but labor/delivery was the hardest thing I had ever done {two marathons seem easy in comparison} so I’m going to say that I do miss feeling the babe move around inside of me as well as lots and lots of sleep if I wanted it, but I am so glad to be on the better side of delivering a baby.

Sex: Hanna Lucy.

Movement: she’s a squirmer out here and swaddling her is a must for helping her calm down.

Thoughts/questions/concerns: hmmm...are we even capable of parenting?

Sleep: not much…let’s leave it at that!

Goals: get some milk coming in and hopefully have her sleep a bit more.

Random: It’s still such a surreal situation; we have a beautiful baby and we are so in love.
 xoxo, natty ♥
